Holiday Research

Over the holidays I watched a thriller/horror film which was I Know What You Did Last Summer (IKWYDLS). What we had to do is watch the film and analyse it in terms of Camerawork, Editing, Mise en Scene and Sound.

IKWYDLS crosses between two genres, Thriller/Horror. This film gives the audience an 'edge of your seat' feeling as it gets your adrenaline going and makes you want to watch more as it constantly keeps you entertained and expecting more.

Camerawork: Throughout the film, you notice that there are allot of Close Ups. The use of Close Ups effects the clip as it interacts with the characters emotions more as it is closer to their face and also makes them more vulnerable as the camera only focuses on their face expression more. We also see this shot when it shows the killers weapon when he's about to kill, for example he uses a crowbar to kill his victim and with this close up it shows the weapon in a bigger way to get the audience scared or prepared as he is about to kill.

Another type of shot they use is Long Shot, this shot is often portrayed by the killer allot which emphasises how effective he is in the film as it has his whole body showing. It also shows a negative side in a way to the character because the camera is further away from them so therefore does not engage with the audience as well as having a close up or even a middle shot.

Editing: Very fast paced, as the killer is out to kill, the editing will tend to be fast as it builds up adrenaline towards the audience and keep the footage moving.

Mise-En-Scene: Costumes used from the characters:
  • The killer - wearing a black cloak and has a hood which is always up so you can not see the killers face. gives a sense of mysterious feeling towards him.
  • The females - in the film all female characters are seen to wear revealing clothing to connote vulnerability and have a sexual effect to it as following the stereotype of females being a sex object and 'open' towards men and the killer.
  • The men are dressed in a way to show masculinity (tight t-shirts) and crop pants. This shows that the men have more power over woman as they are more covered up because the women are wearing skirts and vests which shows more skin.

Sound: The sound used was very effective as when the killer was asbout to kill the sound became loud in pitch and lower in tone which gives the audience a fright. They also lowered the sound at times where a victim could be in a room or a area where they are in danger, this effect could give two stories towards the audience as it could give them a sense that something is going to happen and the effect of the sound will indicate this. The other sense is that because they are in a room/area alone the sound connotes a sense of silence and makes the clip more intense.
