Research (Film Opening Structure)

In our groups we had to discuss on how our opening sequence could be in terms of structure. There are four different structures that film industry uses. (Narrative, Discrete, Credits Over Blank Screen and Heavily Stylised).

The first structure is Narrative. Narrative openings in films tend to tell a story of whats going to happen in the film. It is useful as it gives the audience a head start as they are given a brief idea of what the film is about. The film The Shining shows this type of opening.

Discrete Opening is when the title sequence is separately edited that stand apart from the film opening. The film Seven is a brilliant example of a discrete opening.

Credits Over Blank Screen is pretty straight forward where the titles run over a blank screen. The opening of Donnie Darko shows this type of structure.

And Lastly, Heavily Stylised. This type of structure takes allot of work to produced as it requires allot of fast edits, cuts  in order to give a sophisticated look. the film The Taking of Pelham 123 is a great example of stylised opening. In this opening you we see that allot of cuts and edits have been made and is at a fast paced which connotes the movement of a train as the opening it set mainly in the Underground/Subway of New York.

Below are films that have the four types of structures mentioned.

Narrative Opening (The Shining)

Discrete Opening (Seven)

Credits Over Blank Screen (Donnie Darko)

Heavily Stylised (The Taking of Pelham 123)
